"We choose to go to the moon," declared President John F. Kennedy in 1962 at Rice Stadium in Texas, invoking a new urgency in the space race.

Seven years later, millions of people around the world stopped to watch as Apollo 11 landed on the lunar surface.

Those who remember watching the landing on television still recall the moment as if actual magic was happening before their eyes.

On Saturday, July 20, exactly 50 years to the day that Neil Armstrong took that historic “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” join us to celebrate this monumental mission with a movie night under the waning gibbous moon.

Head back to the year 1969 and join your friends and neighbors on the lawn of the Outdoor Discovery Center, for a showing of the award winning “Apollo 11” documentary on the big screen under an open sky.

Re-create the wonder of watching that historic event and powerful shared experience that helped to shape a generation.

At 8 p.m., enjoy a pre-film discussion about the moon landing and its deep and lasting scientific and cultural impact. Billed as "a cinematic event fifty years in the making, "Apollo 11” was artfully created from a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage and more than 11,000 hours of un-cataloged audio recordings and provides a new look of one of the most iconic moments in human history.
