— Many smiling seniors joined town board members and other local dignitaries on July to celebrate the grand opening of their new center in Chester.

On hand to mark the milestone were Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, Orange County Legislator John Vero, retiring state senator Bill Larkin, and Tom Basile, who is running for Larkin's spot. Town Police Chief Dan Doellinger also attended the ribbon cutting, as did many police officers, including Sgt. Rich Eckert and Officer Robert Bird.

Town supervisor Alex Jamieson, accompanied by his wife, Peg, cut the ribbon — and a new era for Chester's senior citizens was launched. Plans for the center had been in the works for many years, with changes in scale made along the way.

Patrick Arnone presented a chronicle in pictures that showed how the center came together during construction.

Lori Striker was applauded for her efforts in creating the celebration. She's also in charge of the new building. She will build a website that will include a full schedule of events to be held at the facility.

The senior center is open seven days a week, and can be rented out for private parties. For more information call 469-7000.
