Maj. Gen. William F. Ward Jr. of Chester, N.Y., dies at age 89

Chester resident Maj. Gen. William F. Ward, Jr., A.U.S. (Ret.), recently retired chair of the board of trustees of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM), has died at age 89.

He was elected to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine’s Board of Trustees on Sept. 26, 2000, as a trustee, elected chair of the board in July 2006; elected vice chair in July 2008; and elected chair in July 2014. General Ward was also chair of the Trustees of Podia Insurance,an insurance company wholly owned by NYCPM.

General Ward was a 1950 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy commissioned in the Cavalry. He served in Korea with the 1st Cavalry Division as an Infantry Platoon Leader, Reconnaissance Platoon Leader, Aerial Observer, and Tank Battalion Staff Officer, and was highly decorated for his service.

He was appointed by the President to be Chief, Army Reserve, effective Dec. 1, 1986, and served until retirement in August 1991. Immediately prior to his selection as Chief, Army Reserve, he served as the Assistant Deputy Commanding General (Reserve Affairs), Individual Mobilization Augmentee, U.S. Army Forces Command, Ft. McPherson, Ga., and before that as Commander, 77th Army Reserve Command, Ft. Totten, N.Y.

After the Korean War, General Ward earned an M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Law degree from LaSalle University. General Ward's civilian activities include: Controller of the Ansco-Ozalid Division of GAF; Corporate Director of Marketing Service of GAF; Vice President for Finance and Administration, Grosset and Dunlap, Inc.; Vice President-Controller, Dun and Bradstreet; Chairman and President, Dun-Donnelley Publishing Corporation; and President, Gestam, Inc., a real estate investment enterprise. He has been a director, trustee, or consultant with numerous private and public corporations, as well as civic associations.

General Ward was married to the former Marie-Louise Buchheit.
