MIDDLETOWN — High school seniors who have distinguished themselves both in the classroom and the athletic arena were honored May 22 at the annual OCIAA Scholar Athlete Awards Breakfast held at Kuhl’s Highland House in Middletown.
The event was attended by 293 people, including honorees, their families, school district personnel, members of the OCIAA Executive Committee, sponsors, local media, and government officials. Honorees from local schools include Alyssa Detwiler and Aidan O’Connor of Chester; Hayley Winship and Thomas Stickley of Goshen; and Elizabeth McLean and John Zick of Burke Catholic. (See their bios, below.)
The keynote speaker was Nicole Feller Lee, a Valley Central High School alumni and track standout awarded the Scholar Athlete Award in 1989. She worked as a broadcast journalist for many years and currently works in public relations. Lee is the founder of the Corinne Feller Memorial Fund, for which she promoted numerous events and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for ovarian cancer research and spread awareness of this deadly disease that took the life of her sister.
Steve Neuhaus, Orange County Executive, and David Hoovler, Orange County District Attorney, also spoke at the breakfast. The master of ceremonies was Michael Kroemer, Cornwall High School Athletic Director.
Two students, Josiah Spain (James I. O'Neill High School) and Victoria Mirecki (Washingtonville High School), received Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards. Robert Buckley (Monticello High School) was the recipient of the Tyler Muise Award.
The OCIAA Scholar Athlete Awards Breakfast is coordinated by the Orange-Ulster BOCES Athletic Coordinator’s Office, which is part of a BOCES cooperative service offered to school districts. The office serves the needs of the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA), the Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) and Section IX Athletic Council.
