Lawlessness abounds in Goshen and Chester

To the Editor:

The current Town of Chester supervisor allegedly defrauded New York taxpayers of funds; however, this, he claims, is an entirely personal matter between him and the state agency pressing 23 felony charges against him. While Alex is innocent until proven guilty, public concern about this public matter is also warranted, and I would think Alex should step aside as town supervisor until this matter is resolved.

In the neighboring town, Legoland has desecrated 98 acres of woods in two weeks after the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) agreed it could do five acres at a time, and its lawyer told the court that it would do one acre a day. The deforestation or clear-cutting sent a deluge of silt and mud into the Otterkill Creek, changing its color and clogging it. This will lead to more flooding during rain events. This violates the law. Who cares?

In the neighboring town, Wawayanda, CPV blasts noise from its plant way above any reasonable decibel level, into the 80s, during the middle of the night. People in the general vicinity are awakened and cannot sleep. This is lawless; it violates their permits. The town supervisor so admits — but, it goes on, just as Legoland goes on.

Respect for the law is selective, highly selective....

We can and must do better folks before we have no environment left to protect. Remember Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn!
