— The Actors Workshop is offering a one evening free acting workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at the Seligmann Center in Sugar Loaf.

The workshop is is open to anyone and is designed for students between 13 and 22 years of age seeking a serious career in theater. Paul Ellis, director of the Actors Workshop Ensemble and the Air Pirates Radio Theater, is directing the workshop.

Ellis has been teaching acting techniques for over 25 years. In his 50-year career he has directed over 150 plays including stints at the Williams Center for the Arts, Theater Works, New Dramatists and the Nuyorican Poets. Locally he was the director of the Air Pirates, and the Lycian Center. Productions have ranged from Shakespeare and the classic Greeks to contemporaries including Caryl Churchill, Landlord Wilson and Jane Martin. Ellis’s past students have been accepted to some of the finest conservatories including NYU, Emerson College, SUNY Purchase and Juilliard. Many have been seen on Broadway, in major films, and television.

The free workshop is an introduction to the techniques taught in the training program. Actors Workshop begins a ten-week program this spring.

The ten-week workshop is designed to emphasize the group process in the development of theatrical performance. The ensemble workshop begins with exercises involving rhythm, movement, and relationships. Actors work together to solve character, language and script interpretation; at the same time learning the use of sound, movement, and rhythm. Actors will be asked to explore written material in light of their own emotional recall, personal experience, and group relationships. To understand the dual nature of an actor playing a role and build the necessary trust to commit to that role.
