Is a stop-smoking program a deductible medical expense?

Yes, a stop-smoking program is a deductible medical expense that does not have to be prescribed by a doctor However, you cannot include in medical expenses amounts you pay for drugs that do not require a prescription, such as nicotine gum or patches, that are designed to help stop smoking [Rev. Rul. 99-28; 2014 Pub 502, p.13].
