— How would you respond to a life threatening bleeding wound? Chester School District staff addressed that question, learning the basics of trauma care response for uncontrolled bleeding situations as part of the “Stop the Bleed: Bleeding Control for the Injured” training program sponsored by Orange Regional Medical Center in coordination with Mobile Life Support Services.

In this training, recently held at Chester Academy, school health office staff, physical education teachers, coaches, and administrators learned the ABCs of bleeding, how to use tourniquets, and how to stop bleeding by packing a wound or using compression. Program presenters and trainers included Orange Regional Medical Center Injury Prevention Coordinator John Nowinski, Dr. Avindra Ramnarain, M.D. of ORMC, and Mobile Life Paramedic Field Supervisor John Hill.

Town of Chester Police Chief Dan Doellinger recommended the training at a recent school district safety committee meeting.

Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. The goal of the “Stop the Bleed” program, sponsored by the American College of Surgeons, is “to save lives by teaching the civilian population to provide vital initial response to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations.”

“Our goal is to make this training widely available and make bleeding control kits as available as AEDs in public places," said Nowinski.
