Michelle J. Altura dies at age 29

Michelle J. Altura died on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at Mount Sinai-St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. She was 29.

She was born on June 22, 1988, in New York City and was raised in the Goshen, N.Y., area. She attended John S. Burke Catholic High School, where she excelled in academics and participated in the school plays and Mock Trial.

She received her bachelor's degree from Villanova University, where she majored in Math and Comprehensive Science. After graduation, her love of teaching, math, and science led her to work as a tutor in Orange County and later at a non-profit in New York City. Her students meant the world to her, and she often baked for them.

Michelle will be missed by her parents, Drs. Mary and Barry Altura; grandmother, Mary Horan; her brother, Joseph Altura; sister, Dr. Melissa Altura; brother-in-law, Dr. Erik Petersen; nephew, Soren Altura-Petersen; and aunt, Claire Altura. S

he was predeceased by her grandparents, Joseph Horan and Ruth and Martin Altura; and her aunt and uncle, Althea and Joseph Connolly. Michelle will also be missed by her many students past and present.

Visitation was held Dec. 17 at Donovan Funeral Home, Goshen. The funeral service was held Dec. 18 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Goshen, with the burial to follow at St. John Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Figure Skating in Harlem, where she worked.
